What are Zero clients?
Zero clients are desktop machines that have been stripped down to allow the connection of a keyboard, mouse, monitor and physical network cable, to enable end users to connect to a virtual desktop. Zero clients do not have any memory, internal storage or an operating system, the zero clients will however connect to a VDI solution using Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) and they require no software installation or local configuration.
Advantages of using Zero Client machines.
As there is no local storage on a Zero client no settings or company information is stored on the device reducing the risk of data theft, once the device is removed from the network it will be unable to connect to the VDI environment. Another advantage to using Zero clients for desktops is whenever there is a hardware failure the device can be swapped out for a functional device, the user can then login to the VDI environment and continue working with the minimum amount of downtime.
