Microsoft Azure is a becoming more and more common for a offsite backup solution and for a fraction of what it would cost to purchase, configure and maintain a physical storage device.
There are 3 different types of Azure storage for backup, which have different use cases and costs.
Hot Storage – this is for data that you need to access regularly, it’s more of a general-purpose backup and one I would recommend to most customers. Though the price per GB is higher than the other types at £0.01431 per GB, there are no additional costs to add more data or for retrieving data when you need it. This would be the most expensive of the three options due to the features.
Cool Storage – is for data that is used infrequently, It has to be stored for at least 30 days before removal. It can seem more appealing initially with the lower cost of storage of £0.00783 per GB. However, though data writing is still free, data retrieval isn’t and is charged at an additional £0.008 Per GB, it can become more costly than Hot Storage if you retrieve your data regularly.
Archival storage – is for data that is mainly used for compliancy purposes, as it needs to be kept for 180 days prior to removal. In the current IT climate, any data older than 1 month is usually outdated and needs to be replaced. Although it does have its benefits, with the cost being only £0.00186 per GB, it is more affordable than both Hot and Cool Storage. Again, data writing is free, but retrieval is £0.016 Per GB which is double the cost of data retrieval in Cool Storage.
For zero downtime on your data you can opt for Geographic Redundancy for an additional £0.015 per GB which will then replicate your data to a different continent for High Availability.
You can also choose how you want your data to be stored, which offers increased granularity but at additional cost, whether it is in blob or table. I will be discussing the difference between data stores in the next blog.
