VDI and Application Delivery, the future of the Mobile Office
In today’s world, with technology becoming more and more advanced, to the point where we can speak with clients and colleagues from all around the globe from just about anywhere. It begs the question; why can’t I work from home?
Many people believe that as all their work is internet based, they don’t need to be in the office. While this may be the case, there are definite infrastructure challenges for the IT department. The old-fashioned way is to give someone a laptop which must be configured, monitored and updated regularly. However, this posses some massive issues when it comes to security, monitoring and storage. Usually handing over a laptop to someone wouldn’t be viable unless they were traveling or must work out of hours a great deal as there are massive costs associated with the setup.
VDI (Virtual Desktop Infrastructure) could be the solution. It is becoming the new staple and changing the way we connect. Rather than connecting to their physical desktop or having everything on the laptop, you will be connected to a Virtual Machine from a personal device which can be done via a preinstalled app or through a web browser.
The Virtual Machine (VM) can be customised to the user and if configured correctly, the user can be a cross between Non-Persistence and Persistence desktop. A new VM will be created each time they log in, but the user will have their own personal VHDX which will be attached in the VM creation allowing the user to save files to their desktop (on the VM), reducing costs, increasing performance and security.
This not only allows people to work from home within compliance on virtually any device, but it also makes it extremely easy to manage and monitor for administrators.
