The effect of Meltdown and Spectre patches on Windows 7
The Windows 10 article showcases the results of how Windows 10 scalability is affected by the Meltdown and Spectre patches that have been delivered by Microsoft. However, there are still a large number of businesses using Windows 7, therefore Login VSI decided to put Windows 7 through its paces.
Systech IT Solutions and Login VSI are offering a free emergency license to all end user businesses that want to test the impact of Meltdown and Spectre in their own environment. The license is only available until 31st March 2018.
The lab setup has been altered as Windows 7 x64 has smaller hardware requirements, 220 virtual machines with 1.5GB memory are being used.
VSImax = The number of users that can work on a system comfortably before performance is impacted (scale). Higher is better.
VSIbase = The performance of the system when there is little or no stress. If this number increases overall performance decreases. Lower is better.
The results show just how clearly the Microsoft windows update have had a very significant impact on both scalability and performance. The table shows around 14% degradation in User Experience and 10% decrease including the performance tuning. The impact of this could result in additional hardware investment to meet expectations of a pre Meltdown/Spectre environment.
