The effect of Meltdown and Spectre patches on Windows 10
The effect of patching on Meltdown and Spectre has been discussed greatly in recent times as per previous posts. We have seen an impact on centralised desktop environments such as Microsoft RDS, Citrix XenApp & XenDesktop and of course VMware Horizon.
Login VSI created a lab environment to see impact of the Windows 10 patch KB4056892. The impact from applying the patches has shown variability depending on the hardware and software in use. The end result has led to a negative impact on user experience.
Systech IT Solutions and Login VSI are offering a free Emergency license to all end user businesses that want to test the impact of Meltdown and Spectre in their own environment. The license is only available until 31st March 2018.
VSImax = The number of users that can work on a system comfortably before performance is impacted (scale). Higher is better.
VSIbase = The performance of the system when there is little or no stress. If this number increases overall performance decreases. Lower is better.
The results show that there is a decrease in user experience of around 6% when using the Patch KB4056892 and around 3% decrease in user experience when using the patch and performance tuning.
The impact of this could result in additional hardware investment to meet expectations of a pre Meltdown/Spectre environment.
